Lessons for radical innovators from Obama's campaign

November 5, 2008 5:33 PM | No Comments

Umair Haque of Harvard Business Publishing offers some insight into Obama's sweeping victory and how did it happen:

So how did this unlikeliest of candidates do it? How did Obama utilize radically asymmetrical competition to shatter Washington's toxic, bitter 20th century status quo?

The most critical part of the story is the organization Obama built. Though conservatives are still arguing that Obama has little executive experience, nothing could be further from the truth.

Barack Obama is one of the most radical management innovators in the world today. Obama's team built something truly world-changing: a new kind of political organization for the 21st century. It differs from yesterday's political organizations as much as Google and Threadless differ from yesterday's corporations: all are a tiny handful of truly new, 21st century institutions in the world today.

Vaclav Havel: "A fresh wind will drift into the Washington..."

November 5, 2008 3:30 PM | 1 Comment

Vaclav Havel, the tenth and last President of Czechoslovakia and the first President of the Czech Republic, on Obama's victory:

With all respect to Senator McCain, whom I know and whom I find very sympathetic, I am more glad that Barack Obama won the election. I have an intense impression that a fresh wind will drift into the Washington air upon his arrival, that he will be a President of a new generation — a new type, with a great understanding of the multicultural nature of the contemporary world.

Message from Barack Obama: "How this happened"

November 5, 2008 3:13 PM | No Comments

From Obama's blog, addressing last night's victory:

I'm about to head to Grant Park to talk to everyone gathered there, but I wanted to write to you first.

We just made history.

And I don't want you to forget how we did it.

You made history every single day during this campaign -- every day you knocked on doors, made a donation, or talked to your family, friends, and neighbors about why you believe it's time for change.

I want to thank all of you who gave your time, talent, and passion to this campaign. We have a lot of work to do to get our country back on track, and I'll be in touch soon about what comes next.

But I want to be very clear about one thing...

All of this happened because of you.

Thank you,

Barack

Barack Obama for President

November 3, 2008 7:36 PM | No Comments

200806-barack-obama.jpg

To all my American peeps: Tomorrow is the big day. Please take a break and go out and vote. The choice is ultimately yours, however, just make sure you make the right one.

I say Barack Obama for President!

Mike Bloomberg for Mayor! Again! Yeah!

October 24, 2008 3:30 AM | No Comments

New York Times is reporting that the New York City Council on Thursday cleared a path for current NYC Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg to run for re-election, voting to revise a term limits law:

By a 29-22 vote, council members handed Mr. Bloomberg his most personal political triumph yet, and dramatically reshaped the political landscape for 2009. While legal challenges are expected in the days to come, many election law experts believe that the measure will survive. That means Mr. Bloomberg, given his popularity and his intention to spend $80 million to win a third term, would instantly become the favorite in the race.

I'm excited! He's done a great job so far... You go Mike!

Mayor of London endorses Barack Obama

October 21, 2008 9:09 PM | No Comments

Boris Johnson, the current mayor of London, UK, is endorsing Barack Obama for president:

There are all sorts of reasons for hoping that Barack Hussein Obama will be the next president of the United States. He seems highly intelligent. He has an air of courtesy and sincerity. Unlike the current occupant of the White House, he has no difficulty in orally extemporising a series of grammatical English sentences, each containing a main verb. Unlike his opponent, he visibly incarnates change and hope, at a time when America desperately needs both.

[...]

Obama deserves to win because he seems talented, compassionate, and because he offers the hope of rejuvenating the greatest country on earth in the eyes of the rest of us. All those are sufficient reasons for desiring his victory.

Well said. Thank you!

Washington Post endorses Barack Obama

200806-barack-obama.jpg

Great editorial in today's Washington Post endorsing the Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama:

The nominating process this year produced two unusually talented and qualified presidential candidates. There are few public figures we have respected more over the years than Sen. John McCain. Yet it is without ambivalence that we endorse Sen. Barack Obama for president. The choice is made easy in part by Mr. McCain's disappointing campaign, above all his irresponsible selection of a running mate who is not ready to be president. It is made easy in larger part, though, because of our admiration for Mr. Obama and the impressive qualities he has shown during this long race. Yes, we have reservations and concerns, almost inevitably, given Mr. Obama's relatively brief experience in national politics. But we also have enormous hopes.

Quote of the Day: George W. Bush

October 9, 2008 1:20 AM | No Comments

U.S. President George W. Bush, March 26, 2004:

"One other thing I've done, is I've called on private sector mortgage banks and banks to be more aggressive about lending money to first-time home buyers. And the response has been really good. There's a lot of people in this -- our communities around the country that deeply care about the issue of homeownership, and they've been responsive."

Yup, they've been rather over-responsive.

Clitoral Economics

January 24, 2008 12:07 AM | No Comments

Here's the opening paragraph from Barbara Ehrenreich's latest column, simply titled "Clitoral Economics":

With all the talk about how to stimulate it, you'd think that the economy is a giant clitoris. Ben Bernanke may not employ this imagery, but the immediate challenge-and the issue bound to replace Iraq and immigration in the presidential race-is how best to get the economy engorged and throbbing again.

Gotta love Huffington Post!

Quote of the Day: George W. Bush

"I have always told the American people that I believe it's incumbent upon the American President to solve problems diplomatically."

— U.S. president George W. Bush delivers the quote of his presidency. With that being said, GWB is assuring us again that he's nothing but a reckless fool.

Via CNN:

Benazir Bhutto, who was assassinated Thursday in Rawalpindi, was the first female prime minister of Pakistan and of any Islamic nation. She led Pakistan from 1988 to 1990 and again from 1993 to 1996.

Unfortunately, it often takes the ultimate sacrifice to change the world.
