I rarely watch movies nowadays and even rarely rate anything with five stars, but I give this Argentinian film high five without much hesitation. It is the best foreign film I have seen since The Lives Of Others… and that’s saying something. So, in case you haven’t seen it yet, please do yourself a favor and do so. It’s brilliant!
Reporters Jesper Huor and Bosse Lindquist have traveled to key countries where WikiLeaks operates, interviewing top members, such as Assange, new Spokesperson Kristinn Hrafnsson, as well as people like Daniel Domscheit-Berg who now is starting his own version – Openleaks.org.
Written and directed by Stephen Marshall, Holy Wars goes behind the scenes of the 1400 year old conflict between Islam and Christianity.
Shot over a four year period in America, Britain, Lebanon, and Pakistan, Holy Wars follows a danger-seeking Christian missionary and a radical Irish Muslim convert, both of whom believe in an apocalyptic battle, after which their religion will ultimately rule the world. Tracking their lives from the onset of the “War on Terror” through the election of Barack Obama, HolyWars shows that even the most radical of believers can be transformed by our changing world.
The movie opens July 30 in Los Angeles and August 6 in NYC. Official website here.
C’était un Rendezvous (“It was a date”) is a short film (less than 10 minutes) made in 1976 by Claude Lelouch, showing a high speed drive through the streets of Paris.
Finally! Ken Follet’s epic medieval saga The Pillars of the Earth – one of my all-time favorite novels – finally hits the small screen. The story is brilliant and given the length of the book (~1000 pages), I think it’s going to fit much better into the eight-episode mini-series than it would if someone were to try to adapt it to a movie. The mini-series premieres Friday, July 23rd at 10pm EST on Starz.
